I Can Croon It Better Than You Ever Sang It Music Meme

because "Cover Songs Meme" was not as cool

So, [livejournal.com profile] saba1789 and I are cover songs worshippers and decided to make a meme to GET MOAR spread the love :)

Saba managed to keep the linkage under control... Me, not so much.

My "Cover Songs" folder has more than a hundred files in it, so you can understand why it'd be cruel of you to ask me to choose just a handful, but I don't want to scare you away either, so let's try starting with my top 5

o1. The Book of Love performed by The Magnetic Fields. I could listen to this one on loop for a very long time. Best experienced with the volume turned up high. The vibrato will make you shiver.

o2. Fly Me To The Moon performed by Claire. This was one of the versions selected for the Neon Genesis Evangelion End credits. There were four or five of them, but this one was the absolute best.

o3. If You Leave performed by Nada Surf. I like the intro so much ♥ and I really like Caws's voice in general.

o4. Crazy performed by Norah Jones. Attention! This is not Seal's "Crazy" (covered by Alanis Morissette), it's Patsy Cline's and this is a live recording! Norah Jones's voice feels to me like melted butter, and this song is just beautiful.

o5. Dust In The Wind performed live by Linkin Park. The harmonies! OMG the harmonies! If there's something Linkin Park knows how to do is harmonies. I love this cover to pieces (and there a nice little guitar piece at the end).

Now, those ones are my absolute favourite, but you see... There are many more songs I want to share with you! For example:

o6. Steady As She Goes performed by Corinne Bailey Rae. The percussions in this one are really nice and I like what she did with this song.

o7. In Your Eyes performed by Jeffrey Gaines. I've seen many people confuse him with Ben Harper, which it's weird because if you listen to Gaines's voice, it's nothing like Harper's. Anyway, great cover song!

o8. Shiver performed by Maximo Park. I really, really, really like the strings in this one.

o9. Here Comes The Sun performed live by Coldplay. Okay, Coldplay is one of my favourite bands and I'm kind of sad that they rarely do cover songs. But they did do this one :)

1o. Shadow Of The Day performed by Boyce Avenue. I like this one almost more than the original one, mostly because it's just voice plus piano and it's still as strong as the full band version.

11. My Doorbell performed by Jack Johnson. How much does Nasty like Jack Johnson? A lot. A whole lot. She likes him so much that she wished he was included in bandom. *prays for the day that one of our silly boys will ask him to do a collaboration*

Anyway, while I was browsing my cover songs folder, I came up with a game that I call "From Beatles to Bandom". The aim of this game is to connect the Beatles to someone in Bandom by means of cover songs and without using the obvious Ealeanor Rigby cover by Panic in less than 6 steps (because with Bandom, 6 degrees are too many).

I managed to win twice \o/

one. The Beatles' song "Something In The Way She Moves" has been covered by Radiohead (1), whose song "Creep" has been reworked by Bob Dylan (2), authour of the song "Desolation Row" recently covered by My Chemical Romance (3).

two. Bono and The Edge of U2 covered "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (1), U2's song "With Or Without You" got covered by Keane (2) whose song "Everybody's Changing" has been reworked by Lily Allen (3) who also covered "Womanizer" by Britney Spears (4), whose song "Baby One More Time" got covered by Panic! (5).

:D?

If you've managed to reach this point without gnawing on your wrist, GOOD JOB! As a prize for your resiliance to my faily spazzing, I'll give you some goodies!

a. The .zip with all the songs mentioned above
b. Across the Universe OST (Complete with "All You Need is Love" that wasn't in the original cd)
c. The link to download "They Just Howl" cd, an Empires' songs cover project
d. The link to the most wonderful site The Covers Project

Ok, your turn to join the fun!

That version of Fly Me to the Moon was always my favorite too! And it reminds me that I haven't watched my Evangelion tapes in forever.

My music collection is still way too pitiful to participate in this meme, but actually your number one six degrees of bandom can be solved with less connections, since Panic covered Radiohead's Karma Police :)

[identity profile] aredblush.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Evangelion! I watched it religiously every Thursday night (right after Escaflowne!) :D

I know! I figured that out right away, but I didn't want to use Panic as a connection to Bandom twice, so I had to figure out how to link the Beatles to another Bandom band. Actually, I could have linked Bob Dylan to either a)Tom Petty (because the covered "House of the Rising Sun" together) and then Tom Petty to Jon&Eric or b) The Band (who covered Dylan's "Blind Willie Mctell") and then to Panic.

(can you see how much fun I'm having with this game?)

Clearly I don't stand a chance against your superior musical knowledge for this game!

Evangelion was the first anime I bought on VHS tapes, way back when they were still horribly expensive and it took me forever to buy the whole series. I have a crapload of various Evangelion merch as well. I still use my Ayanami Rei fan a lot on hot days because it's the best fan ever :D

*is embarassed*

VHS tapes! I remember the days when dvds weren't around :) They did/do cost a lot! Everytime I walked by the comics shop it was a torture.... I spent many afternoons making eyes at all those pretty pretty things...

Mhmmm, interesting! I'm downloading some stuff and I'm doing this :p I'll help you to spread the love!

[identity profile] aredblush.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn! Now I'll have to go on a quest to find a recording! YouTube, here I come :DDDD

ps: I'm totally super jealous! Were they awesome? Ah, stupid question, of course they were...

[identity profile] unaccompanied-g.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, they were awesome! They're very good live and at one point they came up to play on a little stage in the crowd that was about 15 away from me.

The only thing that wasn't cool was that the amphitheater was outside and there were SO MANY MOSQUITOES. Like, flying into my face. It was very gross. >:[

[identity profile] aredblush.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm making heart eyes at the screen. Did you take any pictures? Are you going to do a recap? *hintshints*

Bleah, mosquitos. Why did they have to survive through the ages? Couldn't they disappear in place of the dodos?

[identity profile] unaccompanied-g.livejournal.com 2009-07-16 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
(Lol, that was supposed to say 15 feet.)

Sadly, I didn't have a camera with me. :( But I might do a recap, idk. ;)

I LOVE COVERS! I think you and Saba already mentioned so many awesome covers that I have nothing to add, but I'll be sure to check my itunes.
I've heard the songs 1, 4, and 7 before and I really really liked them, so I'm excited to listen to all the rest too! I'm way too tired to listen to these tonight though, so I'll have to leave a more coherent comment tomorrow! :)

[identity profile] wethepainted.livejournal.com 2009-07-16 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that I've listened to them all a few times I can also tell you that I love songs 8 and 11 and Keane's U2 cover. I really like Corinne Bailey Rae's voice and oh Jack Johnson, his voice is weirdly soothing in a playfully lazy way! And that In Your Eyes cover is still one of my favourite covers ever.
Also, Across the Universe OST! ♥!

[identity profile] aredblush.livejournal.com 2009-07-20 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
:DDD I'm glad you liked them!
Jack Johnson! I'd love to spend an afternoon swinging in a hammok with him while he sings silly songs tapping on a little bongo *dreams*
Across the Universe is ♥

Those cover songs sound fantastic - totally grabbed the zip file! :D

Also, that game is awesome and you are amazing at it! Let me try:

The Beatles song Come Together was covered by Kris Allen (1) who also totally covered Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror (2) and then Michael Jackson's Beat It got covered by Fall Out Boy (3) - ta-da!
Ahahaha, OMG I suck at this! D: Sorry!

[identity profile] aredblush.livejournal.com 2009-07-20 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you liked them :D I have your .zip on loop :)

That game is very silly, but I like playing it :)
You totally win! :D
