Brendon is a dime. He's the shiniest, roundest, thinnest dime to ever have been minted. And he hates it.
It hasn't always been like that, though.
Just out of the Mint, Brendon was sent to some bank along with all the other dimes to be let free into the world. The other dimes didn't pay much attention to Brendon, who liked to spin around and tinker "Pennies from Heaven" for hours on end. He loved being a coin and rolling around the drawer he was kept in, and when he was given as change to an old lady and left the bank, he was happy. He got to switch owners at a fast pace and met lots of coins and other things people kept in their wallets.
And then he ended up in Pete Wentz’s hand.
~
Pete, Brendon has come to realize, is one of those people who use their wallets as a portable memory box. Instead of leaving his remainders into a shoebox under the bed, Pete stuffs them into his wallet, carrying them around like Linus with his blanket. Brendon also knows that Pete rarely spends his cash, using Dirty the credit card for all kinds of purchases. Since Brendon ended up in the coin pocket of Pete's wallet, Pete has handled change twice, both of them to pay for his drink at Starbucks.
The first time, Brendon got himself three annoying cents all named Alex (who were constantly trying to come up with cool rolling dance moves) and Jon, a faintly tarnished quarter who Brendon instantly took a shine to and maybe crushed on until Jon got distracted by Ryan's not-so-subtle attempts to beam at Jon with his plastic finish. Which was a really short time, to be quite honest. Brendon couldn't even muster some huffing: Ryan was his friend and Brendon loved him and his flat, monotone ID card face too much to resent him for having found love in such a cute coin like Jon. It wasn't like Jon didn't hang out with Brendon. After all, they were still in the same coin pocket.
The second time Pete opened his wallet for money, he took out Bill (a $10 note that had been in the wallet since way before Brendon got there) and a few minutes later, put in two dollars: a dollar coin named Shane, and a one dollar note, Spencer. Brendon was peeking out of the coin pocket to say goodbye to Bill, and he was sliding back inside when he saw Spencer, all crisp and smooth, and tinkled. Spencer heard it, looked at Brendon and fluttered.
So. The reason why Brendon hates being a coin? It's Spencer.
If Brendon wasn't made of copper and nickel, if he was made of paper instead, he could be pressed all along Spencer into the note fold of Pete's wallet.
~
Once, Brendon tried to bounce out of the coin pocket and into the note fold. He ended up rolling after Pete for a whole minute before he was able to jump back into Pete's pocket. It's not an experience that he wants to repeat. Brendon got so scared that he never tried it again, so now he has to content himself with pressing himself really hard into the piece of cloth that separates the coin pocket from the note fold.
It's an achy kind of cuddling, and that's the closest he gets to Spencer.
When Pete wears girl jeans, the wallet gets so squished inside the jeans pocket that Brendon can almost leave an imprint of himself on Spencer's smooth paper through the cloth. Sometimes, on days when that slip of cloth feels really fucking thick, Spencer shimmies around and makes a swishing sound to try and soothe Brendon.
Brendon likes to imagine Spencer moving around. He got to actually see Spencer just once, and apparently it was enough for him to fall head over tail in love with Spencer, but Brendon can still remember the way Spencer's edges curved, sharp and pliant, around the bend in the middle of the wallet while Pete slid him into the note fold.
If he could, Brendon would roll all over those curves in the slowest, most gentle way possible.
~
Brendon doesn't like being a coin and he doesn't like being a coin and then, one day, when Brendon is really sad and not even the Alexes’ dancing in formation can make him smile, Pete's niece tells Pete she wants to show him something and can he please give her a one dollar note?
Brendon panics. Spencer is the only dollar note inside Pete's wallet.
Brendon watches from the crack in the coin pouch as Pete takes Spencer out of the wallet and hands him to his niece. The little girl grabs Spencer and then sits at the table and folds Spencer along his sides, then she folds him again about one third of his length and flips his upper corners downwards until she gets a sort of triangle. Brendon is stricken. The girl keeps folding and flipping, pressing her fingers along the edges to make sure that Spencer won't unravel. When she's finished, she turns around and presents Pete the result.
Spencer is folded to less than three times his original size and looks like a tiny envelope, all sharp angles and precise lines. Brendon hates being a coin because he wants to cry and wail and scream but the only thing he can do is tremble.
He can't even watch anymore and he's trying to wedge himself into the tight stitched side of the pouch when the girl says "Now I need a dime."
Brendon straightens up and flips around. He feels Pete opening the pouch and then Pete's fingers rifle around the coins and then take a hold of Brendon.
"Here, this is the shiniest one" says Pete.
The girl picks Brendon up and then slowly, carefully slides him inside Spencer's folded form, flips the top down and closes the envelope.
"Look uncle Pete! Isn't it nice? Here, keep it!"
Pete takes the precious origami and turns it around to look at it closely, "Cool!"
Pete opens the wallet again and pushes it inside one of the tight slits on the side.
Spencer is all around Brendon and touching him everywhere and they are pressed so tightly together that Brendon can't even shiver.
Spencer shimmies and brushes against Brendon's face, "Hi"
Brendon tinkles, "Hi"

For example, let's say that they are part of a clock. Spencer is the hour hand, and Brendon is the minute hand (for the sake of this, we'll pretend that the clock in question doesn't have a second hand, ok?). Brendon likes being a minute hand becuase he moves faster than Spencer, and he couldn't stand to move so slowly. Brendon likes to make his lap around in 60 minutes, keeping a steady beat that never falters, looking at the room from a new perspective (ahahah) all the time. The best part of his journey around the clockface, though, is when he overlaps with Spencer. They don't have a lot of time to be face to face, but they make do. At first, Brendon thought that he would have preferred being a "second hand", but then Spencer told him that if that was the case, they woulnd't get to be together at all; Spencer had also added, shy, that he kind of liked that Brendon was the one who's steady movement made Spencer tick by: if Brendon were a second hand, there would be someone else between them. Therefore, Brendon is happy to be a minute hand. That doesn't mean that he's not annoyed by that sliver of space that separates him from Spencer when he's covering him. Actually, Brendon has been working on slightly curving his body downward, so as to one day surprise Spencer with a gentle brush.
See? Adorable slow-ticking time \o/ :D?
